WHAT ARE SOIL BLOCKERS?

What are Soil Blockers?

When it comes to planting our vegetable or flower seeds, more often than not, it is a plastic pot that we would reach for. Our greenhouses and gardens are full of these non-environmentally friendly, often single use, products. But what if they could easily be replaced with reusable planting trays and a few innovative gardening tools? Let us tell you all about Soil Blockers.

Designed and manufactured in the UK, Soil Blockers are innovative and environmentally friendly gardening tools. The Soil Blocker range has been developed to provide a simple and more effective method for planting, with an inspired approach to potting on that provides users with a high quality and quantity yield.

How do Soil Blockers work?

In a nutshell, you select your Soil Blocker based on the size of your seed, and create soil blocks using a compost of your choice (although we have a few tried and tested recipes that you can find here). Each soil block is created with an indent in the top of the block to house your seed, the roots of which will grow down into the block and can then be transplanted into the next block up or directly into the garden. There’s no need to remove the plant from the block, or for pricking out – you simply pick up your block and place it into its next home.

Will I need to replace my Soil Blocker each year?

Providing you take care of your Soil Blocker, there’s absolutely no need to replace it with a new one (unless you just can’t resist the temptation of our limited edition colours!). In fact, our tools have been known to be handed from one generation to the next! Each tool is made from high grade zinc plated steel, with recycled plastic components, so as with any metal it is prone to rust if not cared for correctly. We advise dipping your Soil Blocker into water after each use, wiping off any excess water, and leaving it to air dry – and always avoid storing in a damp place.

Where can I buy Soil Blockers?

You can buy them online, directly from us, on our Garden Shop! If you’re new to Soil Blockers, we always advise that you buy a kit to ensure that you have everything that you need to get blocking. Each of our kits also benefits from being at a lower cost than if you bought each tool individually, so it really is worth it! We recommend the Starter Kit or Median Kit to get you set up, and if you’re looking for even more insight into planting with Soil Blockers, add either Eliot Coleman’s – The New Organic Grower or Lisa Mason Ziegler’s – Vegetables Love Flowers.

Effective and easy to use, Soil Blockers provide the perfect environment for your plants to flourish, whilst also reducing the need for single use plastic. You can always get in touch with us with any questions that you might have – or find us on Youtube for useful tips and demonstrations. We hope that you enjoy using your Soil Blockers as much as we enjoy making them!
